The Jets made the last-minute decision to loan Watters on Jan. 31, 1988, just under two weeks before the Olympics opened.  ... Was active in charitable causes during his playing days, including work as honorary commodore of Winnipeg's Canoe-a-thon, an event that raised money to benefit the mentally handicapped, and work on behalf of Big Brothers and Ronald McDonald House when he was in Los Angeles.

HOW HE GOT AWAY
FREE AGENCY: Watters played out his final contract with Winnipeg and became an unrestricted free agent when he refused a termination-contract offer from Jets. He signed with Los Angeles on June 27, 1988.
