Missed remainder of Dallas' 1994 training camp and entire 1995 season and playoffs with strained ligaments in left knee, an injury that required arthroscopic surgery on Sept. 28, 1994. The surgery, performed right before the NHL lockout, did not cause him to miss any games, but did end his career, as he never returned for the resumption of the season in 1995. His recovery from the relatively minor surgery had gone much slower than expected, and he had continued to feel pain in the knee for weeks after the operation. Doctors said they discovered additional problems, including widespread cartilage damage, in the knee after the surgery. They told McPhee in January 1995 that he would have to retire, but he waited until the end of the summer to make his decision.
