Career: Served as N.Y. Islanders assistant coach while Al Arbour was
suspended from Jan. 7 to Jan. 15, 1994. ... Named Philadelphia assistant coach
on July 12, 1994, had title upgraded to associate coach on July 7, 1997, shifted back to assistant coach on March 9, 1998, and remained in
that position until June 16, 1998. ... Named N.Y. Rangers assistant coach on June
18, 1998, and remained in that position through 1999-00 season. ... Named
Toronto assistant coach on Aug. 4, 2000, and held position through 2003-04 season.
Miscellaneous: Played on line with Steve Shutt and Guy Lafleur for
Montreal from 1980-81 season through 1982-83 season. ... Missed one game of 1984 playoffs with injured left
wrist, suffered during Minnesota's April 20, 1984, playoff game at St. Louis.

The Phantom Trade: Acton was traded by Philadelphia with Pete Peeters to
Winnipeg in exchange for future considerations on Sept. 28, 1989. Five days
later, on Oct. 3, 1989, Winnipeg returned Acton and Peeters to Philadelphia in
exchange for Toronto's 1991 fifth-round pick (Juha Ylonen) and an agreement to
cancel the future considerations owed from a July 21, 1989, trade in which
Winnipeg sent Shawn Cronin to Philadelphia. The Acton-Peeters deal was made to
protect Philadelphia from losing either player in the 1989 NHL Waiver Draft.
Neither Acton nor Peeters ever reported to Winnipeg during the five days
between the two trades because Winnipeg general manager Mike Smith told them
it wasn't necessary. At the time of the second trade, Winnipeg was given the
option to take a 1990 sixth-round pick or 1991 fifth-round pick. The
controversial trade prompted an investigation by the NHL, but Flyers general
manager Bob Clarke argued that there was no prearranged deal in place. The
trade was allowed
to stand because the NHL was unable to prove that the first trade had included
any plans for the second trade. However, both Philadelphia and Winnipeg were
fined $10,000 for breaking a league rule that prevents teams from loaning
players. |

Miscellaneous: Came out of
retirement in November 1994 to play 12 games for Philadelphia's AHL affiliate (Hershey) during
NHL lockout. ... Worked at car
dealership in his hometown of Stouffville, Ontario, during off-seasons of his
playing days. ... Played on Minnesota's off-season charity softball team. ...
Active in charitable causes during his playing days, organizing annual
celebrity golf tournament to raise money for Children's Wish Foundation of
Canada.
Acton Beats Cancer: Acton was diagnosed with testicular
cancer during the 2001-02 season and underwent radiation treatment. He took a
leave of absence from his job as a Toronto assistant coach in February 2002 to
undergo the treatments. Inspired by fellow cancer survivor Lance Armstrong,
Acton decided to compete in the Canadian International Marathon in Toronto. He
finished the Oct. 20, 2002, race in 4 hours, 26 minutes. Three months later,
he organized a charity hockey game in his hometown to raise money for cancer
research.
