Missed part of Pittsburgh's 1975 training camp while recovering from surgery to remove his appendix. ... Missed start of 1977-78 season after tearing knee ligaments during Pittsburgh's 1977 preseason game vs. Detroit. The injury required surgery. ... Missed part of 1979-80 season with pulled muscle in back. ... Paired on defense with Randy Carlyle for Pittsburgh in 1980-81, helping Carlyle win Norris Trophy. ... Missed part of 1980-81 season with pulled muscle. ... Suffered career-ending broken leg when he collided with St. Louis' Mike Crombeen during game in Pittsburgh on Nov. 18, 1981. He broke both his tibia and fibula bones. Although he had hoped to come back for the 1982-83 season, he was not healthy enough to attend Pittsburgh's 1982 training camp.
