Miscellaneous: Wore No. 11 and played on line with Garry Unger at St. Louis' 1973 training camp. ... Played on line with Terry O'Reilly in Boston in 1978-79. ... Missed part of 1979-80 season with broken toe on left foot, an injury suffered in March 1980. ... Signed with Philadelphia as free agent in September 1981, but NHL voided the deal because Wensink's contract with Quebec was still in effect. ... Served as unofficial assistant coach at Colorado in 1981-82, working behind bench when he was scratched from lineup. ... Set Colorado/New Jersey franchise record (since broken) with 35 penalty minutes in Oct. 20, 1981, game in Pittsburgh. He was given a major, misconduct and double game misconduct for fighting with Grant Mulvey in the second period. ... Received automatic two-game suspension in March 1982 for taking his fourth game misconduct of the season in Colorado's March 20 game vs. Calgary. ... Was part of Colorado team when franchise relocated to New Jersey on June 30, 1982.

Coaching Career: Was player-coach at Nijmegen (Netherlands) from 1983-1985. ... Served as head coach of St. Louis (NAHL) for two seasons after retirement. ... Coached pee wee and elite developmental hockey in St. Louis for many years after retirement. ... Took many St. Louis pee wee teams to annual international tournament in Quebec.
Miscellaneous: Suspended by AHL for a total of 15 games during 1973-74 season. First suspension was five games for excessive violence in a November 1973 fight against Nova Scotia's Len Cunning in Rochester. Second suspension was 10 games and resulted from his role in a bench-clearing brawl in Rochester's game at Providence on Dec. 23, 1973. The league said Wensink was the first player off the Rochester bench during a fight and also scratched Providence's Bert Wilson near his eyes. The suspension included a $50 fine. A total of $3,125 in fines were levied for the incident -- the highest fine total for an AHL game to that date. ... Missed end of 1974-75 season and entire 1975-76 season while recovering from back surgery performed in January 1975. ...Went into construction business after retirement, running a company in St. Charles, Missouri. ... Worked as regular instructor at St. Louis Blues hockey camp.
Personal: Son of Dutch immigrants, George Wensink and Nellie Bleyenberg, who moved the family from Alberta to live on a dairy farm in Maxville, Ontario, when John was a baby. ... Cousin of former major junior and Dutch League player Bill Wensink, who brought him to the Netherlands to finish his career.
HOW HE GOT AWAY
FREE AGENCY: St. Louis did not offer Wensink a contract for the 1976-77 season. He signed with Boston as a free agent on Oct. 12, 1976, reuniting him with his former Rochester coach, Don Cherry.
