HOW HE GOT AWAY
WHA/EXPANSION: MacDonald never signed with Los Angeles, instead jumping to the WHA in 1973 and remaining in that league through its final season. Edmonton retained his rights at the time of the NHL-WHA merger on June 9, 1979, since Los Angeles did not choose him in the NHL Reclaim Draft because he had signed a 3-year contract with the Oilers that ran through the 1979-80 season.
