The Death of Bruce Melanson:
During an Oshawa Generals practice in January 1985, Melanson left the ice complaining he felt weak. As he sat in the dressing room, preparing to remove equipment, he collapsed while talking to Generals trainer Brian Boyes. An ambulance rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at age 18. The cause of death was a rare heart disease called Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome. The disease, which can cause sudden death, stems from a birth defect of an extra electrical connection between the upper and lower chambers of the heart. Only 1.5 in 1,000 people have this defect, and in most cases it never causes them any trouble. However, if the additional electrical pathway goes haywire, it will stimulate a rapid heart rate that can escalate into ventricular fibrillation, as was the case for Melanson. In his memory, the prestigious Bruce Melanson Memorial Scholarship was established for top student-athletes from high schools in St. John, N.B. Following Melanson's death, Oshawa players wore black armbands for the rest of the 1984-85 season.
Personal: Nicknamed "Moose."
