Miscellaneous: Suffered from degenerative spinal cord condition after his retirement in 1985, and was unable to receive adequate treatment in Russia to preserve his mobility. The disease, which prevented him from working, required specialized emergency surgery that he could not afford. Israel's Ichilov Hospital offered to perform the surgery at a reduced cost, and fund-raisers were held in 1999 to help pay for the trip to Israel. Russian NHL stars, including Pavel Bure, played key roles in fund-raisers, enabling Zhluktov to have the life-saving surgery.
