AWARDS AND HONORS
Miscellaneous: Left unprotected by Hartford for 1988 NHL Waiver Draft. He
was claimed by Minnesota on Oct. 3, 1988. Hartford was able to get Martin
back two months later when Minnesota placed him on waivers, and Hartford
claimed him on Dec. 1, 1988. ... Missed part of 1989-90 season with broken
nose, an injury suffered when he was hit by Randy Cunneyworth's slap shot
during a Hartford team practice on March 21, 1990. ... Signed with
Los Angeles as unrestricted free agent on July 11, 1990, but never played for
parent team. He had become an unrestricted free agent after Hartford chose
not to pick up the option year of a contract he had signed in September
1988. |

Records: Most penalty minutes in a season (128 in 1982-83)
Miscellaneous: Left University of Denver after his freshman year to
enter major-junior hockey. ... Played on line with Mike Richard and Mike
Millar for Binghamton in 1987-88, when he scored 28 goals and 89 points
while also recoding a team-leading 344 penalty minutes. ... Was active
in charitable causes during his playing days in Hartford, including work
with Special Olympics. ... Returned to Victoria and became automobile
mechanic after his retirement, working at Hillside Esso Car Clinic while
also becoming active in local minor hockey.
Traded for a Vehicle: While Martin was
playing for the University of Denver during the 1982-83 season, the
Seattle Breakers traded his WHL rights to Victoria with cash for a used team
bus and future considerations. In fact, the deal was really just Martin
straight-up in lieu of Seattle having to make a down payment on Victoria's
spare bus. The unconventional deal was made in mid-January 1983. "Our old
bus blew its engine on a road trip to Kelowna," Seattle owner John Hamilton
explained to a reporter from The Hockey News. "Victoria had a bus
they couldn't use and we had a player we couldn't use. Bingo." |
| HOW HE GOT AWAY |
| FREE AGENCY: Martin played out his contract
with Winnipeg in 1986-87 and became an unrestricted free agent when the Jets
did not offer him a new contract. He signed with Hartford on July 29, 1987. |
