Made NHL debut in 1980 Stanley Cup playoffs. ... Made NHL regular-season debut in Montreal's Nov. 16, 1980, game at Winnipeg. ... Traded by Montreal to Hartford in exchange for future considerations in September 1983. Joly attended Hartford's training camp, but details of the trade were never released. Hartford returned Joly to Montreal following 1983 training camp, thereby canceling the deal. Unable to trade him to Hartford, Montreal released Joly in October 1983, making him an unrestricted free agent.
