The Loss of an Eye: At age 28, Marini suffered a career-ending eye injury during Fort Wayne's Dec. 5, 1985, IHL game vs. Indianapolis. He was hit in the left eye by a power-play point shot from teammate Doug Rigler during the first period of a 7-4 win. Marini's eye was so severely damaged that doctors at Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital were forced to surgically remove it on Dec. 10, 1985. The impact of the shot had destroyed the left eye's iris, cornea and lens, while causing a massive detachment of the retina. After the game, Marini had emergency surgery to save the eye, and he claimed he could detect light at first. By Dec. 7, 1985, Marini reported that he was totally blind. This prompted doctors to remove the eye and later insert an artificial one.
Personal: Nicknamed "The Wreaker." ... Full name is Joseph Hector Marini.
HOW HE GOT AWAY
TRADE: N.Y. Islanders traded Marini to New Jersey in exchange for the option to switch 1983 fourth-round draft picks on October 1, 1982. N.Y. Islanders exercised this option and drafted Mikko Makela, while New Jersey traded its fourth-round pick to Philadelphia.
