Had 12 penalty minutes, including two fighting majors, in first period of his first NHL game. ... Appeared in three 1981 playoff games for N.Y. Rangers without ever playing for team in a regular-season game.

Miscellaneous: Traded by Houston with Dick Spannbauer to expansion Cincinnati in exchange for future considerations (rights to Don Larway) in June 1974. ... Loaned by Cincinnati to Phoenix (WHA) for 1974-75 season since Cincinnati was not entering league until following year. ... Finished second in WHA with 201 penalty minutes as a rookie in 1974-75. ... Injured knee in final game of 1974-75 season and required postseason surgery. ... Was on Houston team that folded after 1977-78 season. His rights were sold to Winnipeg as the Houston team dissolved in July 1978. Winnipeg then sold his rights to Indianapolis ... Played on Indianapolis team that folded on Dec. 15, 1978, and was one of Wayne Gretzky's first professional teammates. ... Missed part of 1978-79 season with broken jaw.

HOW HE GOT AWAY
WAIVERS: Vancouver placed Hughes on waivers, and he was claimed by Edmonton on October 15, 1980. Under terms of the 1979 NHL-WHA merger, Hughes' last WHA team, Edmonton, had the special right to claim him off waivers for $100.
