The Islanders were to receive a 1983 third-, fourth- or fifth-round pick depending on whether Hartford was able to re-sign Howatt in 1982. The Whalers were unable to re-sign him and instead traded his rights to New Jersey. As a result, the Islanders received a 1983 fifth-round pick (Bob Caulfield).
