Miscellaneous: Played on Baltimore
(WHA) team that folded after 1974-75 season. His rights were obtained by
Cleveland (WHA) in the 1975 WHA Dispersal Draft on June 19, 1975. ... Played on Minnesota
(WHA) team that folded on January 17, 1977, although he left team just before
it folded when cash-strapped Fighting Saints sold him, Butch Deadmarsh and
John Arbour to Calgary. ... Was brought back to NHL by former WHA coach
Johnny Wilson, who was coaching in Colorado. Wilson was Gruen's coach for the
majority of his pro career. ... Missed first half of of 1977-78 season with
knee injury that required surgery. ... Did not play in 1980-81 and 1981-82
seasons as he returned to his native Thunder Bay. Came out of retirement in
1982 to play three seasons for Thunder Bay Twins, the dominant senior team in
Canada at that time.

| HOW HE GOT AWAY |
| TRADE: As Gruen was preparing to bail
out of the WHA and re-enter the NHL, Detroit traded his NHL rights to Colorado
for cash and future considerations
on Feb. 11, 1977. He was released by Colorado after the 1976-77 season, and
Detroit got him back, thereby completing the deal when he signed with Detroit
as a "free agent" on Aug. 17, 1977. |
