From Hockey to Politics
In 1999, Lemieux reached a status
achieved by few former draft picks -- professional politician. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba in a big win
for the New Democratic Party and has become a major player in Manitoba
politics. On Oct. 5, 1999, he was appointed
Minister of Consumer of Corporate Affairs, with responsibility for the
Gaming Control Act. He held that position until July 4, 2000. On Jan.
17, 2001, he was appointed Manitoba's Minister of Culture, Heritage and
Tourism with responsibility for Sport. On Sept. 25, 2002, he was named
Minister of Education, and he became Minister or Transportation on Nov.
4, 2003, before adding the title Minister of Infrastructure and
Transportation in September 2006. On Nov. 3, 2009, he was named Minister
of Local Government. On Oct. 18, 2013, Premier Greg Selinger appointed
Lemieux Minister of Tourism, Culture, Heritage, Sport and Consumer
Protection, and he continues to occupy this position in the Manitoba
legislature.

Career Beyond Hockey: Moved to
Lorette, Manitoba, and worked in sales and as recreation director after
his retirement. In 1985, he went into teaching and spent 14 years as
a teacher in the local public schools before turning to politics in 1999.
Family: Older brother of former minor-leaguer Dan Lemieux.
